My flat feet are killing me

If you have flat feet, then the joints in your feet are out of alignment. Feet weren’t made to be flat, and flat feet just don’t work very well. Your joints are pulling too much one way or the other, putting strain on tendons and ligaments that can hurt.

Sometimes we try to stop the pain, but if your joints are out of whack – the pain can come back as soon as you start walking or running.

What are orthotics?

Orthotics, frequently called arch supports, are a very specialized shoe insert which helps maintain good alignment of the bones and joints of your feet, legs, and spine.

Off-the-shelf arch supports (sometimes incorrectly called orthotics) can be found in many places from doctor’s offices to pharmacies to sports stores. Most people get very little relief from these off-the-shelf shoe inserts.

To help you get the best alignment for your feet, a custom molded orthotic is used. This is a shoe insert made specifically for you and your feet. Custom molded orthotics also are made specifically for the types of activities you participate in. There are orthotics for walking, golf, basketball, tennis, skiing, dancing – you name it. There are specialized orthotics made for just about every activity possible.

Orthotics are a way to support the arch of your feet and help put your joints into better alignment. When your feet are better aligned, there is less strain on the tendons and ligaments of your feet – which helps the pain go away.

Orthotics can be custom made for all shoes and all foot types.

What is an “Internal Orthotic?”

If you have pain from flat feet, then you may be a good candidate for a very quick procedure that treats this problem. This minimally invasive procedure limits the amount of abnormal motion your foot can make, helping to reduce pain and other problems related to flat feet – such as tendinitis, bunions, hammertoes, and ingrown toenails.

The “internal orthotic,” or Subtalar Arthroereisis, is a small device that is inserted into your foot that immediately changes how your foot works. This device limits abnormal motion of your foot and helps prevent your arch from collapsing. It is a quick procedure after which, you walk out of the facility, usually wearing a short walking boot. This is a procedure that can help both children and adults.

The device is so precisely positioned that it can control the abnormal motion even better than custom molded orthotics. Your foot simply works better.
